Plasma Cut Holes vs Drilling

Plasma cut holes are significantly cheaper than drilled holes, however there are considerations that must be made to decide which option is best for you:

  1. Cut Hole diameters should always be 2mm larger than the plate thickness, otherwise hole shape can be out of round with a ragged finish.
  2. Cut holes can vary in diameter by some 4mm overall. OK for bolt holes as long as hole accuracy is not critical.  Should request holes to be 2mm larger than required.
  3. If the hole tolerance is critical then drilled holes should be requested.

Heat Affected Area on Quench and Temper Plate

Although a lot of care is taken when cutting Q&T there will always be a minimal heat affected zone that will have significantly lower hardness than the rest of the plate.  Jobs should not be tested after cutting or welding due to the heat used.

Bending

Different strength materials have limitations on how tight the part can be bent.  This needs to be taken into account when designing the part.
